Project Overview
Obsession. Forbidden Love. Betrayal. This sums up the American novel, "The Great Gatsby," written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. Celebrating its 96th anniversary, I decided to create a modern book design to capture the essence of 1920's New York. The story centers around Jay Gatsby, who is a mysterious and reserved wealthy man who creates an obsession over a married woman named Daisy Buchanan. However when tragedy strikes, things become complicated and he looses the woman he once loved, forever. To celebrate its legacy, I created this book design cover and chapter breaks to show its thematic elements and its depiction of the 1920's lavish lifestyle, inspired by art deco and line art.

Research & Production
I focused on visual elements and pop culture items that were reminiscent of the decade: martini glasses, lavish cars, pearls, feather boas, tuxedos, flapper fashion-wear, jewelry, etc. Extra decorative elements were later added to enhance the book's design. As for typography, I found this font that was very reminiscent to the decade's art deco style and it suited the book cover's design well. In addition, I chose the colors: dark navy blue to represent the night sky and yellow to represent the party lights. Below, shows a mood board of reference material I used to create this book design.
